For example, an 8.5” x 11” restaurant menu may be printed on 100lb matte text and half folded to 8.5” x 5.5”, or printed on 80lb gloss text and roll folded (tri-folded) to 8.5” x 3.67”. A brochure for a provincial park or tourist centre may just as easily have the same print specifications as a menu, but might be laminated for outdoor use.

Flyers are traditionally used to highlight a time-sensitive promotion or special event. Common flyer sizes include an 8.5” x11" sheet folded once or twice, or an 11” x 17" sheet folded twice or several times. Adding an AQ or varnish to your flyers will help protect them during direct mail distribution or door-to-door hand delivery. Or consider using an envelope to carry your flyer; where a teaser message on the envelope could speak further to the promotion or event.

Most posters have similar intentions to flyers, often posted strategically on walls, poles, bulletin boards, etc. If your poster should be weather resistant, try a vinyl stock with permanent adhesive and a poly laminate.

While 4” x 6" and 5” x 7" postcards are commonly used, bigger postcards or unique fold-over cards will help differentiate you from the competition. Personalized Mail (formerly known as Addressed Admail) allows up to 6” x 9.5" for standard sizing, and Neighbourhood Mail (formerly known as Unaddressed Admail) allows up to 6” x 12" for standard sizing.

Similar to bulk printed letterheads, generic postcard shells can also be offset printed, stored and inkjet addressed at a later time. Postcards with a high level of customization and variable imaging on one or both sides can be accomplished through colour laser printing; personalization happens at the same time.

Using multiple pages of engaging content is always a strong strategy for grabbing attention. Physical magazines, catalogues and other booklets take time to produce, and in turn command a longer engagement time from your customers and prospects.

Saddle-stitched booklets are folded and stapled along the spine. Since each folded sheet allows for four pages of content (two on each side), a booklet's total page count should be a multiple of four. So if your magazine content only has 30 pages, you can draft two additional pages of content, or advise on where you would like two blank pages to appear. The maximum page count for saddle stitching is approximately 116 pages, depending on stock weight, before a magazine or catalogue must become perfect bound.

Perfect binding describes a book with a flat straight spine where each inner page is glued individually into a thicker cover; like the IKEA catalogue. Choosing a different sturdier stock for the cover will help minimize wear and tear while also elevating the book's aesthetic appeal. Saddle stitched booklets can benefit from different cover material as well.

Coated text stocks usually work best for inside pages with lots of images. Using lighter stocks like 60lb gloss text for the inside pages will help minimize the overall weight and postage rate.
